Hitler wanted a more popular, more accessible car and talked Porsche
into having a go at the idea. The result was the Volkswagen Beetle,
which became a huge success in Germany and, eventually, around the
world. The Volkswagen Jetta Wagon, or SportsWagen, as they now call it,
came from that tradition.
There were some steps in between, of course. As the Beetle dropped
in popularity, VW developed the Rabbit, and after that, beginning in
the 1980 model year, the Jetta Sedan. The Jetta was, like many
Volkswagens before it, a huge success, becoming the best selling
European car in America.
As a direct result of the popularity of the Jetta, Volkswagen
introduced the Jetta Wagon in the 2001 model year. The Wagon, too, was
well received by Americans, having good cargo space and front seat
capacity. It was a little small in the rear seat, but large enough to
fit small children comfortably, which made it a good fit as a car for
young families.
Volkswagen Beetles at the height of their popularity in 1971, consumer demand for the rounded little car slowly began to decrease. The last original Beetle was sold in the United States in 1978; though sales continued in other parts of the world until the very last original Beetle was produced in July of 2003.
Meanwhile, in 1998 a whole new generation of American drivers and industry analysts who now had access to many automotive engineering and technology advancements craved the return of the Bugs unique characteristics blended with modern automotive expertise. The ‘new’ Beetle sedan was introduced in America for the 1998 model year and a convertible version of the ‘new’ Bug debuted in 2003. With its front situated water cooled engine and front wheel drive platform, the only true similarities between the original and the new Beetle was the reminiscent style and shape. Many modern amenities helped to make the ‘new’ Beetle a practical and reliable car for every day use that was greeted enthusiastically by a new generation of drivers.

Calling it “new” doesn’t really fit anymore since the car has been back in production since 1998, and hasn’t had any major redesigns since then. The Beetle is based on the VW golf platform, and comes in either a coupe or convertible. With so many newer vehicles crowding the small car market, the one major selling point this one has over its competition is the distinctive look.
Most people who buy the Volkswagen Beetle are usually those who value form over function. It continues to carry the classic style and appearance of its early versions. The convertible comes equipped with a power folding soft top, and the coupe has a power sunroof as an option. Both trims come standard with 16″ alloy wheels, but you can upgrade to 17″ as factory options. On the inside, the 2009 Beetle has full power accessories, and many of the other features so common to new vehicles today, such as heated seats and premium sound system. This is, however, the area where the Beetle falls short of its competition. As you can imagine, there is limited space inside for anything other than your passengers. Long trips in this car will not be very comfortable for back seat passengers because of the shape of the roof.
This system allows the car to maintain a certain distance between itself and the car in front of it while in cruise control. The car will automatically brake and accelerate to stay within a certain distance. These settings will be determined by the driver ahead of time. The Passat also offers Lane Assistance technology. This system can detect when the car drifts out of its lane and then gently steers it back automatically.
The 2009 Volkswagen Passat CC is one of the most forward thinking and technologically advanced cars in its class. It’s also relatively affordable, with a base price of around $26,000. One should keep in mind, however, that this particular group of cars is still quite small. It will continue to grow as the popularity of cars like this continues to grow.
The goal being to allow easier access to the rear seats than in the two-door version.
In comparison to the sedan, the Passat CC is slightly longer and wider, but at the time, it is about two inches lower. This has given the car a broader appearance from the front, and a more streamlined side view. The CC also offers an electronically actuated Panorama sunroof. This basically means that the entire front half of the roof is glass. Overall, the CC has a very sleek, aerodynamic look to it, mainly because of the long front and rear window slopes. On the inside, the Passat CC doesn’t differ much from the sedan, with the exception of added heat controls and more comfortable seats.
There are two engine choices available for the Passat CC. The first is a 2.0 liter TSI diesel that produces 200 horsepower. This engine will move the CC from 0-62 mph in 7.6 seconds. The other is a 300 horsepower 3.6 liter V6 gasoline engine. With this engine, the Passat will hit 62 mph in 6.6 seconds. Both of these engines are mated with a six speed automatic transmission. Regardless of the engine, you can expect 21/31 mpg, where fuel mileage is concerned. The Passat CC also offers what they call Dynamic Drive Control, which adjusts the suspension to adapt to the conditions of the road or terrain.
Volkswagen Touareg takes it all in stride, with 3 engine configurations and permanent 4-wheel drive. You can manage icy roads, desert terrain, or scorching superhighway easy as you please. Touareg also monitors weight distribution to the four wheels and adjusts wheel-body distance with an amazing air suspension system.
Crowd-pleaser that it is, Volkswagen knows when to bring back classic vehicles for an encore performance, case in point, the New Beetle. The 2007 Volkswagen Beetle is the engineering manifestation of happiness. Not even the most ardent stick-in-the-mud can squelch the automatic smile he gets after seeing the New Volkswagen Beetle for the first time. Volkswagen has in its stable a group of thoroughbreds that offer the promise of driving excitement, practicality, and safety no matter which model you choose.
No matter where you look in the Volkswagen stable, quality, innovation, and safety abound. Take the 2007 Volkswagen GTI for example, with its passenger protection in the form of a rigid steel protective cage and 2.0 liter 200 hp turbocharged engine, there are no limits to the fun you can have.
The wonders of the 2007 Volkswagen Passat Wagon are myriad, including 36 cubic feet of cargo space, yet near-luxury car styling and features. What can compare to the Passat Wagon when it comes to its practicality and safety, notably its rain-sensing wipers and heated mirrors. You quickly realize that those features are not just amenities, but full-fledged necessities if you use your Passat Wagon for morning commute driving. We can think of no better-equipped wagon than the Passat to traverse the roads in the US during these times of unexpected weather extremes.
Lupo 3L was a special-edition
18th June 2009
The Lupo 3L was a special-edition made with the intent of being the world’s first car in series production consuming as little as 3 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres (78 miles per US gallon or 94 miles per Imperial gallon). To achieve this the 3L was significantly changed from the standard Lupo to include:
Lupo 3L
* 1.2 litre 3-cylinder diesel engine with turbocharger and direct injection (61 hp, 140 Nm)
* Use of light-weight aluminum and magnesium alloys for doors, bonnet, rear-hatch, seat frames, engine block, wheels, suspension system etc. to achieve a weight of only 830 kg (1830 lb)
* Tiptronic gearbox
* Engine start/stop automatic to avoid long idling periods
* Low rolling resistance tires
* battery location moved to boot for better weight distribution
During the period of series production of the Lupo 3L, Volkswagen also presented the 1L Concept, a prototype made with the objective of proving the capability of producing a roadworthy vehicle consuming only 1 litre of fuel per 100 kilometres (235 miles per US gallon).
For aerodynamics, the car seats two in tandem, rather than side-by-side. There are no rear view mirrors and it instead uses cameras and electronic displays. The rear wheels are close together to allow a streamlined body. The total aerodynamic drag is very small because both the drag coefficient and the frontal area are small (see drag equation). The drag coefficient (Cd) is 0.159,[2] compared to 0.30 for typical cars.
The external dimensions of the car are 3.47 m (11.4 ft) long, 1.25 m (4.1 ft) wide and 1.0 m (3.3 ft) tall.
The car features an aircraft-style canopy, flat wheel covers and an underbelly cover to smooth the airflow. The engine cooling vents open only as needed.
There is 80 L (2.8 cu ft) of storage space.
For light weight, the car uses an unpainted carbon fibre skin over a magnesium-alloy subframe. Individual components have been designed for low weight, including engine, transmission, suspension, wheels (carbon fibre), brakes (aluminium), hubs (titanium), bearings (ceramic), interior, and so on. Empty vehicle weight is 290 kg (639 lb).
